BIO
Bio
Andrejka Velikonja-Skračić
is a Slovenian-Croatian multimedia artist living and working in Split. She expresses herself in various artistic forms, primarily through independent film, poetry and photography, but also occasionally through painting and collage.
She was born
in 1967 in Šempeter pri Gorici, Slovenia. While still in elementary school, she published her first poems and short prose, and participated in the school radio. In high school, she continued writing and performing with a literary group, while also falling in love with photography and climbing. She found herself in a deep existential crisis, not knowing which path to take. In the end, she chose film quite unexpectedly.
On her first mountaineering expedition
in Patagonia in December 1990, she was handed a camera to record the events and was completely captivated by the medium of film. Five years later, she made her debut, Morje sanj (The sea of dreams).
Her distinctive artistic language
involves reflection, with which she explores the essence of her reality and examines the social structures that stifle, constrict and censor her voice. Through all media, she tries to free herself from a traumatic past and a problematic present and find new words, forms, various lengths of duration and harmony. Her central themes include the search for her own authentic language and her own space under the sun, identity, roots, freedom, alienation in a consumer society, the collapse of values, the fate of people on the margins and a deep connection with nature and the responsibility for preserving space and heritage.
Her poems
are deeply confessional; in them she searches for meaning in a crumbling world, love in superficial relationships, beauty in kitsch, life in monotony, closeness in alienation and the joy of everyday life.
Her engagement in photography
represents a significant counterpoint in her artistic development – as if words were no longer enough for her. She is interested in everyday objects that others take for granted, but she breathes poetics and magic into them. By playfully placing objects in new relationships, she gives them completely new meanings and finds new forms. Her photographs of nature, landscapes and people are completely different, radiating transcendence and mysticism. Her photographs, where she explores the possibilities of the camera itself, are also interesting.
Andrejka's film work
is marked by a combination of experimental, documentary and fiction approaches. She focuses on intimate themes such as motherhood, female identity and creativity, voice, body, trauma and love for nature and space. Her work critically addresses generally accepted social rules and established systems and seeks new paths for a more humane world.
By breaking the boundaries of perception,
she experiments with time, dreams, reality and memories. Her style is intimate and poetic, but also raw and organic, and visual images serve as a means of telling the stories that “haunt” her. Her work has been recognised and awarded many times at numerous film festivals.
